  • A functioning sprinkler system can keep your property’s lawn or landscape area hydrated on hot days. However, there are some problems you might run into with any sprinkler system. It is important to be aware of these issues and to know when to call a technician.

COMMON ISSUES TO LOOK FOR:
Repairing water leaks
Your sprinkler system may involve several hoses and cover a fair amount of ground. It isn’t always easy to locate a specific leak within that system. If your sprinkler system isn’t functioning at peak levels, it could be because of a leak or fault. Taking too much time to locate the source could cost you a lot in water or dry out your lawn while the system is off.

Testing the solenoid
A controller sends an electrical current to the solenoid that tells it to activate and open the valve. If your valve is not opening, it could be a sign that the solenoid has an issue.

SPRINKLER HEAD ISSUES:
Clogged or Blocked Sprinkler Heads
When a sprinkler head stops functioning properly, it could indicate the head is blocked or clogged. Check for debris and mineral deposits from water.

Broken Sprinkler Head
One of the worst problems that you can face is a broken sprinkler head. This usually happens when the head sticks too high out of the ground. It becomes susceptible to impact damage and creates a tripping hazard.

Valve Stuck Open
If a sprinkler continues to run even when you turn off the irrigation system, this is a sign of a broken valve. A bad valve can not only cause problems for the lawn but also cost a lot of money on your water bill.

  • Some cities are starting to enforce water restrictions with citations, here are some tips to help you save on water usage:

● Check the irrigation system for leaks
● Adjust Sprinkler Zones
● Don’t water everyday
● Extend days between watering
● Water during the right time of the day
● Water your lawn as needed
● Rely on rain water
● Recycle water whenever possible
● Install smart watering devices
● Design landscapes for water conservation
● Avoid mowing grass too short
● Leave grass clippings on your lawn
● Sweep sidewalks and driveways instead of using the hose

Those with new sod, grass seed, or plantings are an exception, but need to submit a permit to their city to be approved for additional watering.

Please visit your city’s page for more information and guidelines. If you have any questions about your system or water saving, please contact us at:

  • From the desk of Charles:

It was my great honor this past week to be informed that SIMA has bestowed upon me the Lifetime Achievement Award. I join a group of professionals that are second to none, I am deeply honored to have my name alongside each one of them.

I have spent my life working with SIMA to help members and newcomers to the Snow and Ice management industry learn for the challenges I faced.

Our industry has changed a lot over the past 40 years. Some of my proudest accomplishments from this time in the industry include, watching my son and business partner Alex develop into the awesome man he is, his industry knowledge, work ethic and ability make him an amazing partner. Second, would be helping to educate ourselves, other service providers and our clients. Over the years I have had relationships with some of the top property managers in our market. It humbles me when they have put their faith in my team, allowing us to partner and provide them with a solution.

I am grateful to SIMA for this honor, and all the opportunities they have provided.

-Charles

As the Fertilization Manager, Bronson oversees those in the department, making sure they have what they need, and ensuring that jobs get done as scheduled. When he is not overseeing those in his department, he is assisting customers with needs related to fertilization and residential mowing.

Bronson’s background includes many years of experience in the green industry. He started cutting grass when he was 15 and has been doing it since. He’s been working in the lawn department for 5 years for both residential and commercial. He has worked his way up from a laborer, foreman, to the department head, and has also been involved in various fields along the way including fertilization, irrigation, snow removal, and landscaping.

When he is not working, he enjoys spending his time golfing, hunting, or fishing. His favorite season is fall because the long summer work is done, and hunting season is here, and he gets to bring his dog Zoey with him.

An item on his bucket list he wants to check off is to go skydiving. And if he had a superpower, it would be the ability to travel back and forth through time.
