About
Fifty notes on remote monitoring and management, written for the people running it rather than the people selling it.
The position
An unread alert queue is worse than no monitoring, because it looks like monitoring. A platform at default settings produces more alerts than anybody will read.
The estate is not yours. You do not control what is installed, who has administrator rights, or whether a machine is on during the patch window — and you are accountable anyway.
The tool that fixes can also break. It is remote code execution at high privilege across many organisations, and it deserves stronger controls than anything else you run.
Who it is for
Service providers and anybody running managed services. The assumptions are different from internal IT monitoring: multi-tenancy, contracts, billing and client approval are central here and absent there.
What is deliberately absent
Vendor and product names. The category consolidates and the names date.
Breach statistics, which come from surveys commissioned by companies selling controls.
And any claim that automation removes the problem, which it does not — it can conceal it.
Nothing here is legal advice
Contractual and notification obligations differ by jurisdiction and by agreement. Take advice on your own position.
